He’s the hockey league’s first deaf defenseman. Magnus Eriksson has been dubbed the Silent Defender by the reporters he will only speak to through a sign language interpreter. She’s a reporter he’s slow to trust. Jennie Fields caught Magnus’ eye the first time he saw her standing in the back of the locker room. Physically, she’s just his type—long legs, voluptuous curves and an ass he’d gladly worship. Her only downfall is her job. Unless it’s a slap shot from the blue line, taking chances isn’t Magnus’ strong suit. He’s comfortable with his life, even being deaf, but the more he gets to know Jennie, the more he wonders if he’s been wrong all this time. Could he have his career, his right to remain silent and the girl? If so, he’d have the perfect hat trick.

Silent Defender Boardwalk Breakers Volume 1 Nikki Worrell Books

I know when a book really touches me when long after the last page is read and the book is closed, my mind is still thinking about the characters and the story. This was one of those.

Mags is deaf and plays hockey for the NHL. I was one of those who was concerned about how this would play out and I give a Gordie Howe Hat trick (I consider him to be the BEST of all times) to Nikki Worrell with this one. She wrote an incredibly believable story about how Mags became the first successful hockey player.

Jennie is a strong woman who goes for what she wants and once they start dating she will only wait so long and she takes the bull by the horns. Having a son who is deaf one of the things I loved about the realism here. Jennie never treated him like he was deaf. She saw the man inside as a whole person.

I loved the refreshing story line, with no female vixen out to get Mags for her own, there wasn't some great secret that one of them was holding from the other, or any huge angst that was going to destroy them. It was an engaging story of two people who are attracted to each other and the bumps along the road to their HEA. This story made me laugh...it made me cry ... it made me cheer for the Breakers and yeah, it made me damn mad at one point but at the end of the day...and the book, I wanted to read it again and again.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a story that will pull you in, make you fall in love with the couple, believe in happily ever after, make you feel. If I could give this more stars I would. An awesome start to this series!

Silent Defender Boardwalk Breakers Volume 1 Nikki Worrell Books Reviews

Move over Jody Magnus is my new #1......
Great start to the new series .... Great story no cheating or heartbreak ..
Just a well writen love story... If you've never read Nikki s book your missing out......
If you are looking for your run of the mill "girl meets hockey player who turns out not to be the jerk she thought he was, they fall in love, there is some sort of miscommunication that leads to a bump in the relationship but they work it out and they live happily ever after" you should looke some place else. This story is different in a very good way! I recommend not only this book but all of this author's earlier stories about the players on the San Diego team too.
This is the first book I read from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was intrigued by the idea of a deaf hockey player and was not disappointed. A great story from both view points giving you an overall sense of the characters and how they begin their relationship. The fact that Jennie had a deaf Grandmother helps her relate to Magnus with an understanding that others would not find as easy. What I know of the deaf and their needs is small but she has done so much work to make it true that this should not be a reason to stay away from this book. I found his ability to play hockey totally believable and was impressed by the detail to the game and his needs that were in this book. I loved the supporting characters and can't wait for the next in this series. I went back and read all of the previous books by Nikki Worrell to catch up on folks mentioned in this as former teammates and found an author who I will definitely follow from now on. Her characters are warm, funny, sexy and the story has everything you want in a romance and a believable HEA! I highly recommend this book--it is a must read for hockey romance lovers. I plan to re-read this book often and will definitely be first in line for the next book in the series.
Tonight I reread this book as I read the first time for pleasure and the second time to refresh my memory for a review. I LOVED Silent Defender. I have already started recommending it to friends. The storyline was believable. The characters had depth and the team is fun! I am going to go back and reread some of the previous stories I have already purchased again and am excited about what will come next. Nikki Worrell did an excellent job of telling the story with lots of great emotions for the character who could not hear and how the team and family members handled communicating with him. Please support this great author . . .it is a worthwhile purchase and read!
What happens when the League's Silent Defenseman and a Locker Room Reporter meet. You have absolute chemistry. Magnus Ericksson a player for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Breakers is a deaf hockey player who is also weary of anyone hearing his voice, so when it comes to reporters he is most definitely standoffish. But when it comes to Jennie Fields things are different.
Jennie Fields is a locker room reporter and when she interviews Magnus, little does he know she knows sign language and that can be a game changer.
The attraction you see between the two of them is so amazing you can definitely feel it coming off the pages, you see how two people learn to trust each other and the relationship you see develop is heartwarming. If you are a lover of hockey, romance and everything in between than this is a must read.
I really enjoyed Silent Defender. There are many hockey books in the sports fiction genre, but this is the first one (that I am aware of), that really delves into the life of a handicapped professional athlete. As many other reviewers have mentioned, Mags is the first deaf player in the NHL. I liked his drive and determination to be the absolute best despite his deafness, his relationship with his teammates, and the mechanics of his game. I loved how he was slightly socially awkward, even though he is one of the most sought after players inside and outside of the rink. Finally, I really adore how Mags loves so hard and so completely. He is a well developed character that was easy to fall in love with.

Jennie is also a wonderful character. She is humble, and the sweet girl next door type. She accepts people for who they are, and she was perfect for Mags because she allowed him to be himself and did not define him by his disability. Jennie definitely pulled Mags out of his shell and helped him grow as person, which is a wonderful thing to see. They were definitely perfect for each other and I enjoyed their journey. I would recommend this book to anyone, and I can't wait to see the next hockey hunk from the Breakers find his happily ever after.
