Ever wondered what it would be like to escape civilization to a place with nary a television and barely a phone? In 1983, David Fagan arrived on the Saronic Greek island of Hydra for an hour’s stay, ripped up his return ticket, and marooned himself as a permanent inmate of “the Rock.” Through a series of anecdotes, affectionately termed “rhubarbs,” he paints a vivid portrait of life among quirky expats and lovable locals on a unique island during a bygone era, before the first world and twenty-first century caught up with him.

David Fagan is one of the very best storytellers I've ever met.Orally he used to be absolutely world-class. Now, finally, he's done for the second time what everyone who knew and knows him have been urging him to do for years: put his stories into writing.
And yes, he's getting the hang of it: it's entertaining all the time, hilarious pretty often and even reaching his stratospheric oral level once in a while.
He has lived so many absurd situations, has a keen and compassionate eye for his fellow island dwellers (whom he calls 'inmates'), both Greek and foreign. I'm sure the next one will be better again and I'm keeping the first two, if only because I think they'll be collectors items one day.

Rhubarb! Tales of Survival on a Little Greek Island David Fagan Jennifer Kelland Fagan 9781482596137 Books Reviews
A light-hearted look at life on a small Greek island, written by a Brit who wanted to get away from the rat-race. Then he found there were just as many rats and other critters on this very small island where transportation is by donkey. The main drag is Donkeyshit Lane. A good, easy read.
DAVID FAGAN'S STORIES ARE PURE DELIGHT. I'M HOPING FOR ANOTHER BATCH SOON.
I am a great lover of almost all things Greek. Must have been one in a past life. So I looked forward to readeing about the Island of Hydra. And there are a lot of amusing stories from an ex-pat's point of view. However, I found the stories episodic and rather strung together without a really cohesive narrative from the writer. I wanted to get more into his character and felt that would have helped unite the series of stories her presented.
But I did enjoy the book and there are a number of really funny and frustrating incidents.
Very entertaining book - well worth the read.
Buy the book.

Go to Greece.

Great book and stories, Loved it.
A great book written with humour and insight into the fun and frustrations of living on an island - generated some lovely memories of Hydra.
Love this book about my favorite island in Greece. Very funny stories about the wild characters you get on these islands, whether you actually know the true characters or not!
